Location Demographics

Embracing the energetic inner city lifestyle, the suburb of Southbank can be found only 2 km from Melbourne’s prominent Central Business District and right next to the famous Yarra River. The area was formerly an industrial district before it was transformed into a growing residential town during an urban renewal program in the early 1990s. Along with having plenty of high rise apartments and office buildings, it is also widely known for having cultural venues, a booming business centre, and some of Australia’s tallest buildings including the Australia 108 Skyscraper and the Eureka Tower. 

Rich in resources and amenities, professionals, singles and families have all happily moved into the lively neighbourhood of Southbank. From information gathered by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there are over 22 600 residents making up the entire population and around 5 300 families within the community. The amount of private dwellings are close to 17 500 properties with more being built in the following years. Furthermore, the median age is 31 years old with most people between 25 to 30 years old.

Travel & Infrastructure

Surrounded by several public transport hubs, commuters can enjoy less hassle and quick journeys. The iconic Flinders Street Railway Station is within walking distance and serves the entire metropolitan rail network at a central location. Less than 2 km away, the Southern Cross Railway Station has 16 platforms with trains following both metropolitan and regional lines. Trams are also running regularly with stops at Sturt Street and City Road. Drivers are directly linked to the West Gate Freeway for added convenience. 

Recognised as one of the city’s busiest public spaces, the Melbourne City Council are looking forward to bringing the Southbank Promenade Upgrade project to life. The goal is to revitalise a 300 metre section from Princes Bridge to Evan Walker Bridge for greater safety and improved amenity for all users. It will involve replacing bluestone paving, adding lighting upgrades, creating new seating, placing stairs and ramps between levels and planting new native trees. Delivering in two stages, works are set to be completed by mid-2023.

Shopping

Having loads of clothing stores and malls at Southbank, find all your shopping wants and needs in no time. The Queensbridge Arcade Shopping Centre is right around the corner while the DFO South Wharf Shopping Centre is only a 2 km trip with various outlets. For more, Crown Towers also has international retailers and luxury fashion brands. Dine out with friends at the Deck Southbank Restaurant which offers modern Australian cuisine at an elegant balcony overlooking the skyline. You can also get dinner at the Soho Restaurant and Bar with delicious Italian meals and live music. Taste quality Japanese dishes with riverside views at Nobu or treat yourself to some fine dining at the Eureka 89 Restaurant. 

 

Schools & Recreation

Students are properly accommodated for with a number of schools right at their doorstep. Under 2 km , younger year levels can attend the South Melbourne Primary School. The Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and the Australian Ballet School are both just an easy walk. To add, the Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School and the Melbourne Grammar School are both around 2 km by car. Preschool children are taken care of at the Nido Early School or at Only About Children Southbank. Meanwhile, those in higher education can join the RMIT University Melbourne City Campus or the University of Melbourne.

Whether you’re wanting to visit celebrated landmarks or explore popular tourist spots, Southbank truly has it all. The Melbourne Skydeck has a gold-plated observation deck and a protruding glass cube for uninterrupted panoramic views. Catch a show at the Southbank Theatre or check out the contemporary exhibits at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. On Sturt Street, the Malthouse Theatre also holds monthly events and a comedy festival. Explore even more collections of artworks and artefacts at the National Gallery of Victoria. Invite everyone along for a sightseeing tour at Melbourne River Cruises and go bowling at Kingpin Crown with the family. Spend some time outdoors at the Alexandra Gardens with a waterfront park, a playground and walking and cycling trails. The Queen Victoria Gardens also displays ponds and colourful flowers.
