Location Demographics

Just next door to picturesque beachfronts, the lively suburb of Rockdale is part of Sydney’s St George region and known for its accessible location to major hubs. It is situated close to 17kms south of Sydney’s famous Central Business District. Belonging to the Bayside Council, it has heritage-listed sites such as the Wilsons Farm House and Lydham Hall. The name ‘Rockdale’ was originally suggested in 1878 and since then the town has expanded into a thriving area and is regarded for its cafe culture and art deco architecture. 

The diverse and growing neighbourhood has brought in professionals, students and families with children into the community. Overflowing with local charm and packed with amenities, the number of residents is expected to continue increasing. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has calculated around 15 500 people and 4 000 families living in Rockdale. The median age is 34 years old with most falling in between the 30 to 35-year-old age group. Private dwellings have currently reached over 6 500 homes.

Travel & Infrastructure

For convenient journeys, commuters are able to utilise multiple forms of public transport close by. Operated by Sydney Trains, the Rockdale Railway Station is within walking distance and has 5 platforms with trains following the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line. Passengers can also catch the bus with stops on Villiers Street, Bryant Street, Geeves Avenue and more spread throughout the vicinity. Drivers are quickly connected to the Princes Highway for direct trips to their destinations while those travelling are only 4kms from the International Sydney Airport.

After receiving feedback, The Bayside Council released their 2032 Community Strategic Plan which follows four themes that are focused on being a vibrant place, people being connected in a creative city, being green and sustainable and having a prosperous community. It aims to meet future challenges and bring opportunities with emerging technology, commercial activity and social, economic and environment resilience. Furthermore, new community facilities have been built by Transport for NSW with more open spaces to be delivered towards late 2025.

 

Shopping

Shoppers are able to find what they’re searching for straight away with retailers, convenience stores and outlets right outside their doorstep. The Rockdale Plaza Shopping Centre is just a short walk and has shops, groceries and casual dining options. There are also fruit and vegetable markets on Frederick Street and Walz Street for fresh produce. Under 2kms away, the Kogarah Town Centre has more supermarkets and services. To satisfy your appetite, Rockdale has various cafes and restaurants located right by the town centre. Grab a cup of coffee at the Coffee Drop Cafe or at the Soul Mill Cafe on King Street. The Swallow Coffee Traders Shop is a comfortable venue that is also popular for its gourmet coffee and brunch meals. Have a night out at the Hotel Rockdale with tasty dishes, drinks, live music and upbeat karaoke nights.

Schools & Recreation

Parents and students are able to easily move in with an array of schools close to home. The Rockdale Public School, the St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and the Uniting Frederick Street Preschool are all a quick walk. To add, the Bright Stars Preschool is also just up ahead while the Kogarah High School and the St George Girls High School are both a 1km walk. With plenty of courses and programs, students can easily walk to Rockford College and Pacific College Sydney. The TAFE NSW St George Main Campus is also around a 2km drive.

At Rockdale, there’s plenty of inclusive activities and enjoyable attractions to explore. Feel free to spend some time at the Rockdale Park with wide fields, a playground for the kids, gardens and a water feature. Alternatively, you may want to catch a play or event at the Guild Theatre which hosts monthly productions and entertaining performances. Play some games at the Ador Reserve with sport facilities available or bring the younger ones to the exciting playground. Have a day out with your friends at the Brighton Le Sands Beach and go for a cool swim or hang out by the shore while taking in the sunshine. Also 2kms away, Lady Robinsons Beach is great for a serene getaway where you can unwind or go for a stroll by the water. 

Having all of this to offer and more, Rockdale is definitely the suburb to be for those wanting to create or invest in a new home.
