Location Demographics

Nestled right within Lake Kawana, the suburb of Birtinya is located close to 17km southeast of the lively Sunshine Coast. It is highly known for being home to the Kawana Forest and for having an abundance of natural reserves and greenery. The progressive town is part of the Kawana Waters urban centre which was previously known as Kawana Island before being renamed in the year 1968. A couple of landmarks include the Lake Kawana Community Centre and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. 

Filled with open spaces, visitors and locals are drawn to the growing modern area. Families, retirees, professionals and couples have eagerly moved into the charming vicinity. According to information gathered by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the present population consists of around 4 400 people and the median age is 36 years old. There are also close to 2 000 private properties and 1 100 families living at Birtinya. In addition, most of the residents belong to the 25 to 29-year-old age group.

Travel & Infrastructure

With public transport services running regularly, commuters are able to easily reach their destinations. Bus stops are spread out all over with a few on Nicklin Way, Florey Boulevard and Grand Parade. The Greyhound Bus Stop at Mooloolaba is only 10kms away for those taking interstate trips while the Sunshine Coast Airport Transfers is less than a 2km distance and provides shuttles. On the other hand, drivers are quickly connected to major thoroughfares heading towards Bruce Highway. 

The Sunshine Coast Council have arranged a Community Strategy Plan to organise a clear framework for the future and to put forward strategic goals. With the population estimated to reach around 500 000 people by the year 2041, the council aims to be more diverse, equitable and inclusive.  After reviewing feedback, the action plan will focus on building community infrastructure, bringing social inclusion, strengthening recovery from disaster, improving engagement and promoting health and wellbeing. It will also tackle issues involving housing affordability, transport, employment, education, safety and sustainability by adapting to new trends, improved technologies and ideas. 



Sort out your weekly shop in no time with a handful of supermarkets and stores right at the centre of town. The Stockland Birtinya Shopping Centre hosts casual dining, groceries and beauty services. For your homeware needs, the Home Central Shopping Centre is a 2km drive and has furniture stores and outdoor retailers. At Decisions Cafe, order delicious dishes and try out their healthy smoothies or fresh juices. You may also want to grab a coffee and lunch from the Nurcha Kawana Cafe. Have a night out at the Malt Shovel Taphouse or grab some dinner at the Wildflower Kitchen Restaurant by the lakeside.

Schools & Recreation

Being surrounded by several quality schools, parents with children are able to move in comfortably. Both under 4kms away, secondary students can attend the Kawana Waters State College while younger year levels are looked after at Talara Primary College. Preschoolers are able to join the C&K Kawana Community Kindergarten and Preschool or Green Leaves Early Learning. Swimming lessons are also available at Swim Australia. Those taking up tertiary studies can enrol at the University of the Sunshine Coast which is just 10 km by car.
