Location Demographics

As a scenic shoreline destination, the breathtaking suburb of Rainbow Bay is truly one of a kind. It is located on the southern end of Queensland and around 32 km south from Gold Coast’s busy Central Business District. Originally called Sharks Bay, the place was officially given the name Rainbow Bay in May 1925. The area presently welcomes everyone to well known surf beaches, vast ocean views and natural rock formations. Travellers and surfers are drawn to the iconic Snapper Rocks surf break which is renowned for its impressive waves and for hosting international surfing competitions. It forms the first part of the Superbank surf break which extends through the beaches at Greenmount Point, Coolangatta and Kirra.

Being a highly sought-after vicinity, plenty of residents are able to enjoy an inclusive environment and a relaxed atmosphere. Families with children, couples and retirees have built a strong sense of community and instantly feel right at home. Rainbow Bay is predominantly a residential area and the growing population have settled into mostly standalone houses and apartments. More developments are expected to take place which will rapidly increase the number of private dwellings.

Travel & Infrastructure

Passengers at Rainbow Bay are conveniently connected to multiple public transport services. You can catch the train at the Varsity Lakes Railway Station which follows the Gold Coast Line. There are a few buses running with stops that can be found on Griffith St at Coolangatta and on Wharf Street at Tweed Heads. To add, the Gold Coast Airport is just 4 km away and offers both local and international flights. Those driving are able to take the Gold Coast Highway for direct trips.

The construction stage has commenced for a $100 million building project which will bring 21 luxury apartments overlooking Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks. The developer aims to deliver a sub-tropical and modernist architectural approach to beachfront apartment living. Meanwhile, the Gold Coast City Council has also put together a Council Plan that is in line with the City Vision of being inspired by lifestyle and being driven by opportunity. The main outcomes involve providing a thriving economy, having a connected community, being naturally unique, growing liveable places and encouraging a sustainable city.

Shopping

Having a diverse range of malls and brands, shoppers are able to easily buy everything they’re after. Around the corner, the Strand at Coolangatta is right by the beach and offers supermarkets, specialty boutiques and a movie theatre. At a similar distance, the Tweed Mall Shopping Centre hosts megastores, fast food choices, a daily farmer’s market and more. When it comes to dining, you’ll find heaps of options to suit all tastes and budgets. Whether you're looking for a casual cafe or a fine dining experience, there's something for everyone. On Ward Street, the Switchfoot Cafe serves delicious drinks and healthy meals. The Fresh & Fried on Rainbow Cafe also has tasty burgers, fish and chips and other quick bites. Order dinner from the Sunshine Thai Restaurant with traditional decor and outdoor tables or from the Cooly Breeze Restaurant with a rooftop setting. 

 

Schools & Recreation

Parents and students at Rainbow Bay are able to choose from quality schools nearby. The St Joseph’s Primary School and the Coolangatta State School are both less than a 3 km drive. Just a short walking distance, younger children can attend the Twin Towns Kindergarten or the Tweed Heads Community Preschool. Those in secondary year levels can join the Tweed River High School while the Pacific Coast Christian School caters to all ages. The Coolangatta Learn to Surf is right at the town centre and teaches private and group surf lessons. Only 4 km away, the Southern Cross University Gold Coast Campus brings various degrees and pathways. 

Rainbow Bay is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of parks, beaches, and walking trails to explore. You’ll be able to experience plenty of fun activities for the whole family such as swimming, snorkelling, and paddle boarding. For some peaceful views, the Rainbow Bay Lookout is a popular tourist attraction and shows off panoramic scenery. You can also walk over to the Point Danger Park for a beachside lookout with walking trails or get together with friends at Froggies Beach for a BBQ and a picnic. At the end of the day, catch a wonderful sunset at Pat Fagan Park and unwind on the boardwalk.
