Location Demographics

Widely known as a holiday spot and a surfing haven, the coastal suburb of Burleigh Heads welcomes you to its natural scenery and sunny beaches. It is part of the Sunshine State and is located around 12kms south from Gold Coast’s energetic Central Business District. As a distinctive surf town, its deep roots in surfing history can be attributed to its iconic surf breaks and for cultivating modern professional surfing competitions. It is also home to a renowned national park and to preserved heritage-listed sites such as the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade and the Burleigh Heads Library Gardens. 

Being well loved by travellers and locals, residents happily embrace the place’s laidback culture and lifestyle with families, retirees and professionals moving in comfortably. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has estimated the population to reach close to 10 600 people and around 5 800 private dwellings. The most popular age group is between 25 to 35 years old and the median age is 42 years old. Having family friendly facilities and attractions, Burleigh Heads welcomes 2 600 families into the neighbourhood.

Travel & Infrastructure

You won’t have to worry about lengthy journey times as the area is well-serviced by various public transport choices. The Varsity Lakes Train Station is only 3kms away and carries passengers along the Gold Coast line. There are also buses running on Burleigh Street, West Burleigh Road and right by the local parks for more convenience. Drivers can make the most of having quick access to both the Pacific Motorway and the Gold Coast Highway.

Following community feedback, planning and research, the City of Gold Coast is continuing to make progress with the Burleigh Heads Place Making Plan. The plan framework aims to maintain a strong connection to the ocean, improve walkability and transport access, enhance key features and improve the visual amenity and streetscape character of the suburb while also focusing on the importance of protecting the environment. With major construction already underway, there are also some priority projects being rolled out regarding the implementation of the light rail connecting Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads.



Shoppers are surrounded with retail brands, boutiques and lovely dining experiences. At James Street Precinct, you’ll find an assortment of clothing stores, designer brands, surf shops, cafes and restaurants serving up a variety of tasty cuisines. Only 3kms from the town centre, the Stockland Burleigh Heads Shopping Centre provides medical services, supermarkets and fast food options. Set against pretty beachside views, grab a bite at the Surf Club, have dinner with friends at the Burleigh Pavilion or visit the Burleigh Heads Hotel for a relaxed hangout with sport games and outdoor seating.  


Schools & Recreation

Burleigh Heads is filled with several schools making it an ideal home for families with children. Both less than a 6km trip, the Burleigh Heads State School and Burleigh Sandpiper Preschool & Kindergarten are able to look after primary and early learning students. There are also a range of other specialised schools including the Huxley School of Makeup, the Vocal Adrenaline Performing Arts Music School, the Laurie Lawrence Swim School and the Godfathers of the Ocean Surf School. Secondary students can attend Kings Christian College, Hillcrest Christian College or Marymount College. Bond University is also a 6km drive for students travelling by car.

Situated at a central location with vast surfing beaches and relaxing spaces, it is no surprise that Burleigh Heads is one of the most sought-after suburbs around the Gold Coast vicinity. There’s plenty of tourist spots to discover like the Burleigh Heads National Park with rainforest trails and wildlife viewing or take pictures by the Burleigh Heads Rock Pools or the Tallebudgera Seawall. The Tumgun Lookout and the Jebbribillum Lookout offer breathtaking views of the skyline and the waves on the shore. You may also want to check out the Village Markets which showcase fashion and craft stalls or the Art and Craft on the Coast Beachfront Markets which are held on the last Sunday of the month. Bring the whole family along to the David Fleay Wildlife Park on Loman Lane to see all kinds of animals, native species, shows and feedings. For some downtime, you can also soak up some sunshine by the beach at the John Laws Park or at the Rotary Park.
