Location Demographics

Internationally recognised as one of the world’s most iconic cities and home to famous Australian landmarks, there is no other place than Sydney’s Central Business District. It is the capital of New South Wales and is best known for the distinctive Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and waterfront features by the Darling Harbour. In 2019, Sydney was ranked third on the list of the world’s most liveable cities. The renowned Central Business District is the heart of the state and is one of the nation’s most popular destinations for visitors far and wide. 

As the main commercial and financial district with vibrant attractions, professionals, families, students, singles and tourists have found their home in Sydney's CBD. According to the 2021 Census, the suburb of Sydney has a population of around 16,700 people and 3,500 families. Furthermore, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has also calculated close to 10 400 private dwellings within the area. A large majority of residents belong to the 25 to 30-year-old age group and the median age is 32 years old.

Travel & Infrastructure

Commuters are surrounded by a range of public transport services right at their doorstep. There are light rail stations and tram stops running regularly with passengers taking either the L1 Dulwich Hill services, the L2 Randwick services or the L3 Kingsford services. The Circular Quay Railway Station is the main hub for those catching trains following the Inner West and Leppington Line, the Bankstown Line and the Airport and South Line. Buses are also accessible with a few stops on George Street and Castlereagh Street while multiple ferry services are travelling in the vicinity at the Circular Quay Ferry Wharf. Drivers are directly linked with the Cahill Expressway and other major highways.

A Community Strategic Plan has been presented by the City of Sydney Council with the goal of delivering a sustainable Sydney from 2030 to 2050. Through community feedback and setting 10 key performance targets, the long term project focuses on building a more sustainable, equitable and resilient city. It aims to have an increase of jobs, new cultural production floor space, reduction of waste, more environmentally friendly changes and stronger community cohesion.

 

Shopping

With huge malls and trendy stores everywhere you turn, shoppers are definitely spoilt for choice. The Westfield Sydney Shopping Centre is packed with fashion brands, dining options, wellbeing services and inclusive monthly events. Just around the corner, the Pitt Street Mall has a handful of speciality boutiques and modern shops lined up on different levels. The Sydney Arcade is across the road and has cafes, services and health and beauty stores. Also on Pitt Street, the Strand Arcade is a historical site and has upscale retailers and more restaurants. The Pavilion On George, the Skyview Shopping Plaza and the World Square Shopping Centre all offer a variety of cuisines, supermarkets and an indoor and outdoor shopping experience.

Schools & Recreation

At Sydney’s CBD, parents with children can find a mix of schools for students young and old. Preschoolers are able to be looked after at Guardian Childcare Education or at the Elizabeth Street Early Learning Centre. For private education, the International Grammar School on Kelly Street caters to all year levels while secondary students can attend the Macquarie Grammar School or the Sydney Grammar School. There are also public schools close by with the Ultimo Primary School and the Inner Sydney High School both less than 4kms away. Specialist schools are also available with the Conservatorium High School and the Kaplan Business School. Tertiary students can take their pick between the University of Sydney, the Western Sydney University Sydney Campus, the University of Wollongong Sydney CBD Campus, CQUniversity and more. 

Pouring with rich history and symbolic attractions, there is something for everybody at Sydney’s much loved CBD. As a famous tourist spot, you can’t miss visiting the Harbour Bridge and going beyond your comfort zone by climbing up the bridge for breathtaking city views. The whole family will enjoy the day at Luna Park with entertaining games, adventurous rides and roller coasters or at the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium observing all kinds of sea creatures. Having a thriving art scene, you can spend time discovering the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Powerhouse Museum, the Australian National Maritime Museum or the Art Gallery of New South Wales with its contemporary and indigenous art displays. For a peaceful escape, take the time to explore the significant building and statues at Hyde Park or check out the colourful gardens and glasshouses at the Royal Botanic Garden.
