Location Demographics

Next to the Woronora River, the welcoming suburb of Sutherland is situated around 31 km south from Sydney’s much-loved Central Business District. It belongs to the Sutherland Shire and is part of the growing Southern Sydney region. In the 1860s, the land was originally filled with timber so one of the first industries in the area was timber cutting. Presently, the place is mostly residential along with a few commercial centres and facilities.

At a spacious location with an abundance of leafy parks, families, retirees and students have eagerly joined the flourishing community. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has estimated close to 12 000 people make up the current population with most falling in between the 30 to 34-year-old age group. According to the 2021 Census, the median age is 37 years old and there are around 3 200 families settled in. Meanwhile, the number of private dwellings has reached over 5 700 properties.

Travel & Infrastructure

Passengers are conveniently surrounded by public transport services for quicker journeys. Just an easy walk, the Sutherland Railway Station has 3 platforms with trains heading down the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line and the South Coast Line. Buses are also available with a handful of stops on Flora Street and Eton Street. If you are travelling by car, the Princes Highway is instantly accessible and connects to major cities.

Looking to be completed by the end of this year, the Sutherland Shire City Council have taken on the Sutherland Entertainment Centre Upgrade project. The transformation aims to enhance Sutherland’s arts and performance culture while also involving environmental and ecological sustainability initiatives. Some of the key features will include a fully refurbished theatre with tiered seating for over 680 guests, a new flexible teaching and rehearsal space, a larger foyer and stage, roof repairs and more. The new entry forecourt will also incorporate an outdoor event space.

Right at the heart of town, there are streets lined up with malls, speciality stores and casual dining. The Eton Arcade has an indoor complex with homeware shops and cafes. You’ll also be able to pick from a range of supermarkets and services just around the block. On the other hand, the South Village Shopping Centre and the Kirrawee Oak Road Shopping Centre are both less than a 2km drive with monthly events and retail brands. Experience global cuisines from countless restaurants and find what you’re craving. You can have dinner at the Moonlight Restaurant with Vietnamese dishes, grab some food from the Midnight Pizza Cafe or order meals at the Sushi Train Restaurant on President Avenue.

 

Schools & Recreation

When it comes to choosing schools, parents and students are properly looked after. The Sutherland Public School and the St Patrick's Catholic Primary School are both a nearby walk for younger year levels. Kindergarten children can join the Sutherland Preschool on Glencoe Street or the KU Sutherland Preschool on Old Princes Highway. St Patrick’s College is open to middle schoolers while the Kirrawee High School is only 3 km away. For extracurricular learning, the A Sharp Music School and Prodigy Music School are both close by. Tertiary students can attend the University Of Wollongong Southern Sydney Campus, the Australian Nursing & Training Services School or the Built Form Design Academy. 

At Sutherland, enjoy a relaxing lifestyle with nature reserves and amenities. Sutherland Park is a great setting for some fresh air, to get some exercise or to go for a walk with your dog. Just across the road, the Forby Sutherland Memorial Park has a water fountain feature, colourful flowers, benches and picnic spots. Get together with the family and cool off with a swim at the Sutherland Leisure Centre. You’ll be able to use the outdoor and indoor pools, the spa, the weights and aerobics rooms and the water park for the kids. A 2km trip, visit the iconic Sydney Tramway Museum and take a ride on a vintage tram. Held every Saturday, the Shire Farmers' Market brings together stalls with fresh ingredients, locally grown produce, hot drinks and sweet treats. In addition, the Bungoona Lookout is a well-known tourist attraction and provides breathtaking views.
