Location Demographics

Right on the coast, the extraordinary suburb of Mermaid Beach boasts world-class sandy beaches and sprawling shorelines. It is situated around 8kms south-east of the Gold Coast and 83 km south-east of Brisbane’s bustling Central Business District. Historically, the town's name was derived from Explorer John Oxley’s boat called the HMS Mermaid. It is what he sailed when discovering the Brisbane River. The area is now a well-known holiday destination and has some of the best wave breaks in Australia making it very popular with surfers and swimmers. 

Encouraging a relaxed lifestyle alongside nature, plenty of professionals, singles, families and beach lovers have been eager to join the friendly neighbourhood. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has estimated over 7 300 residents in the total population and 4 400 private dwellings that have been built. Furthermore, the median age is 35 years old while most people belong to the 25 to 30-year-old category. There are also close to 2 000 families who have happily settled in.

Travel & Infrastructure

Being surrounded by multiple public transport services, everyone is able to quickly plan their journeys. Just a 1km walk, the Broadbeach South Light Rail Station serves as a major hub and has 2 light rail platforms and 2 bus platforms. Meanwhile, the Broadbeach North Light Rail Station is also available and follows the G:link line. Bus stops are all spread out with a couple at Mermaid Park and Crescent Avenue. The Gold Coast Highway runs straight through the vicinity for direct trips.

Started in August 2022, the Gold Coast City Council has been working towards the Mermaid Park New Shared Path project. This development will focus on creating bridges and shared paths through Mermaid Park and connecting users from Hedges Avenue to the Gold Coast Highway. It is expected to be completed during November 2022 and will provide new lighting installations, a safe transport pathway and improved cycling and pedestrian connectivity. To add, construction works for the Mermaid Light Rail Link began in October 2022 and will aim to be completed by 2025.

Shopping 

With a handful of malls and department stores, shoppers are well taken care of. Right around the corner, the Mermaid Beach Village Shopping Centre has a variety of eateries and services. On the other hand, the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre is close to 1km away and is filled with big retail brands and dining options. The Oasis Shopping Centre is also further up ahead with fashion boutiques and a fitness centre. Get dinner at Etsu Izakaya for Japanese dishes served in a contemporary spot or order at the Mermaid Beach Tavern which is known for its tasty grilled meals. Taste different cuisines at the Goccia Italian Pizzeria and at the Bonita Bonita Mexican Restaurant. 

 

Schools & Recreation

Having many schools to select from, students of all year levels are able to easily continue their studies. The Broadbeach State School is within walking distance for children in primary while the Miami State High School is 3 km by car. Extracurricularactivities can be found at the LAUNCH Performing Arts Centre Dance School, the Galeb Brothers BJJ Martial Arts School or the Ikin Gold Coast Dance Studio.  Within 4km, preschoolers can attend both the Dolphin Avenue Early Learning Centre and the Aussie Kids at Mermaid Kindergarten. Those in tertiary can go to the Gold Coast International College or to Bond University.

At Mermaid Beach, enjoy being a part of a lively community right by the beachfront. You can get together with friends and have fun surfing or escape the heat by going for a swim. Alternatively, soak in the warm sunshine and unwind by walking along the picturesque shoreline. Bring the family along for a game of mini golf at Putt Putt Golf with 3 themed golf courses plus a video game arcade. Take your pets for a play at Mermaid Park or spend time outdoors at Nobby Beach with a playground for the kids and BBQ facilities. For more, check out the 19 Karen Contemporary Artspace with creative exhibitions and monthly events. Around 3kms away, the HIVE Art Gallery also displays unique artworks and holds regular workshops.
