Melbourne ranked most liveable city five years running

It’s good news for Melbourne, as the Australian capital city of Victoria has held on to its title of being named as the world’s most liveable city for the fifth consecutive year running.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) liveability survey which surveyed 140 cities, rates each city out of 100 in areas including education, healthcare, stability, culture and environment and infrastructure.

According to the survey, the five most liveable cities are:
  1. Melbourne, Australia (97.5)
  2. Vienna, Austria (97.4)
  3. Vancouver, Canada (97.3)
  4. Toronto, Canada (97.2)
  5. Adelaide, Australia (96.6)
  6. Calgary, Canada (96.6)
Interestingly, the top five for 2015 were also the top five in 2014 and both Australia and Canada dominate the top five, with Vienna in position two, whilst seven of the top ten cities were in Australia and Canada.

Melbourne achieved a near perfect score of 97.5 out of a possible 100, the same score as last year and is the only city to have won this title five consecutive times, whilst Adelaide who ranked in fifth position again had a score of 96.6.

According to the EIU report, "Those that score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density".

"These can foster a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure."

It’s easy to see why Melbourne has again ranked in first place; the city has so much to offer everyone and has plenty of charm and appeal. Whether you enjoy sports, shopping, arts and culture or are an absolute foodie and coffee lover; this vibrant city will definitely appeal to you. You can even find expansive parklands, perfect for a lazy picnic and have easy access to the sea and beach when you want to cool down on a hot summer’s day.

In fact, the population of Melbourne is growing at a rapid pace and is expected to overtake Sydney’s population in 2056, where both cities will be home to more than 8 million people. And it’s not just overseas immigrants from China moving here; there is also plenty of interstate migration and Melbourne remains a very multi-cultural city to live where you can find people from all walks of life.

According to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, "Melbourne has the best of everything and this title proves it." He also added that, "Perfect scores in health care, education and infrastructure, culture, environment and sport are all proof there's no place like Victoria."

Even though Melbourne remains the number one city in the world to live, the Victorian Government is continuing to improve this city and investing $20 billion in transport infrastructure as well as $5.4 billion in health and education to help create a stronger economy and stay at the top of the rankings.

Interestingly, over the past six months, 38 cities out of the 140 cities surveyed have seen a change in their scores, whilst over the last 12 months this figure rises to 53 cities. Out of these 53 cities, 38 saw a drop in their scores, caused by the deterioration in stability in many cities worldwide. This is mainly due to civil unrest, acts of terror and violence.

The city that saw the biggest fall in liveability scores over a five-year period was the Syrian capital Damascus. However, Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe was named the most improved city in the EIU report.

In comparison, the five least liveable cities for 2015 were:
  1. Tripoli, Libya
  2. Lagos, Nigeria
  3. Port Moresby, PNG
  4. Dhaka, Bangladesh
  5. Damascus, Syria
