Kingdom Tower set to become world’s tallest tower

The race is on to build the world’s next tallest tower, and if all goes to plan, Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia will set the new record.

Positioned in the heart of Kingdom City, a brand new development in the north of the city, the tower is designed by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill Architecture and will reach a height of at least 1000 metres, 173 metres taller than the Burj Khalifa which was also designed by the same company.

Kingdom Tower will make the likes of the Empire State Building (443 metres) and the Shard in London (306 metres) look tiny in comparison, and once completed it will become the first tower to top the 1km mark.

This tower represents a statement of wealth and power which is reflected throughout the Kingdom City development and is set to become a resort-style destination for the super rich and Arabian royalty and sits alongside the Red Sea.

Costing approximately 1.2 billion USD, work has already begun on the first phase of construction, with a construction area totalling over 500,000 square metres. Once complete, the tower will house not only a Four Seasons hotel, but also Four Seasons serviced apartments and luxury offices with 56 elevators serving the tower. It will also house the world’s highest observation deck on the 157th level offering staggering views.

The design of the tower incorporates many unique structural and aesthetic features, and the overall design was inspired by nature, resembling a desert plant resistant to the harsh desert surroundings and shooting upwards to represent Saudi Arabia’s growth and future.

The triangular footprint is also designed to reduce the wind loads and is perfect for residential units whilst the tower also symbolises the traditional gateway to the Islamic holy city of Mecca.

No exact completion date has been given, but it is thought that this mesmerising tower might be completed as early as 2017 or 2018 and could have over 200 floors.
