Barangaroo South Achieves 6 Star Green Star Rating

There’s great news for the new Barangaroo development as Barangaroo South was awarded a 6 Star Green Star Communities rating and scored an unprecedented 104.98 out of a possible 110 points.

This rating was awarded by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and based its assessment on the sustainability performance across five impact categories – Governance, Innovation, Liveability, Economic Prosperity and the Environment.

Barangaroo South is Sydney’s largest urban renewal project since the 2000 Olympics and is targeted to become Australia’s first large-scale carbon neutral community. To achieve this it will include measures such as energy-efficient design, on and offsite low carbon and renewable energy along with zero carbon waste treatment and commuter carbon emission offsets.

The precinct is capable of being water positive, with an on-site blackwater treatment plant capable of supplying one million litres of recycled water a day to the precinct and surrounding suburbs. Barangaroo is also targeting zero net waste to landfill by 2020.

Once complete, 1,500 residents will call Barangaroo South their home. There will also be next generation office space for 23,000 workers as well over 80 new retail outlets, whilst more than 50% of the precinct will be used for open public spaces which everyone can enjoy.

Lendlease is the developer in charge of this exciting Barangaroo South precinct. According to Lendlease Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Steve McCann, “As the world’s population urbanises, there is a greater emphasis placed on the role of the built environment, including place, sustainability and community outcomes.”

He continued by saying, “People want to live and work in cities that are liveable, connected, accessible and beautiful. This fits into our company’s ethos - at Lendlease our culture is all about innovating to deliver authentic places that ultimately enrich the lives of people.”

Lendlease is no stranger to green buildings and Green Star ratings though having completed 70 Green Star certified projects to date.

Sydney is currently undergoing dramatic changes to meet the needs of its future population and Barangaroo South is just one part of the whole Barangaroo project that is set to change the skyline of Sydney. One major change will include the 22 hectare former container port on the western edge of Sydney’s CBD will be transformed into a 21st century icon over the next two decades. Once complete, it will create a naturalistic interpretation of the original headland.

Another key highlight is the waterfront precinct costing at least $6 billion which is designed to reconnect the Sydney CBD with the waterfront of the western harbour. 50% of this precinct will be turned into public open space and parklands with a continuous waterfront promenade which can be enjoyed by everyone. Barangaroo will be developed and funded by private sector investment and will be delivered at no net cost to the taxpayer.

The major companies that are helping to fund this huge project and signed leases within Barangaroo South include Westpac, KPMG, HSBC, and Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Barangaroo South isn’t the only 6 star rated building within Sydney though. Other Green Buildings within Sydney that have achieved a 6 star rating include UNSW Tyree Building, Westpac Place and CBA Fitout – Darling Walk. In fact, the very first building in Australia to achieve a perfect 6 Star Green Star – Office Design v3 rating was in fact the Pixel Building, which completed in 2010 in Melbourne.

Currently under construction, Barangaroo South’s Tower 3 will measure 39 storeys high and will sit in-between two other commercial towers to form part of the International Towers Sydney (ITS). It is expected to complete this year.

With all these exciting changes and developments coming to Sydney, it will really become the place to live, work and play.
