Suburb Profile: West Melbourne, VIC

Combining vibrant city life with scenic riverside views, the flourishing suburb of West Melbourne brings the best of both worlds for residents. It can be found right next door to the city, just 4km west of Melbourne’s renowned Central Business District. The neighbourhood has been originally recognised for its industrial area and offering an assortment of marketplaces by the port. It’s at an ideal location surrounded by the progressive town of Docklands and just across from the Port Melbourne coast.

The Neighbours 

As part of the inner city suburbs, West Melbourne is a hub for both industrial, commercial and residential settings. According to the City Of Melbourne demographics, there are a variety of households with singles making up 23% and around 46% being families. With the types of property, about 34% of housing are townhouses while 33% are low-rise apartments. The Australian Bureau Of Statistics has calculated the median age to be 30 years old with the majority belonging to the 25 to 35 years old age group. 

The Commute

For added convenience, there is a range of public transport services available for commuters. The Flagstaff and North Melbourne Train Stations are both just a 3km drive allowing passengers to enjoy a quick commute. Meanwhile, there are also a couple of buses running along Footscray Road and a handful of trams heading towards the city centre. Those travelling by car, will have direct access to the M1 and M2 freeway for a smooth journey back and forth.

Shopping For The Family

When it comes to your shopping needs, there are a bunch of popular malls, brands and dining options. The District Docklands brings together fashion retailers, a cinema and an entertainment complex. On the other hand, the iconic Melbourne Central Shopping Centre and Emporium both offer a multilevel of luxury stores and a number of cuisines. For your essentials, there are several supermarkets along Spencer Street and a Costco just 1km from West Melbourne.  

The School Run

Parents and students won’t have to worry with many private and public schools just a stone’s throw away. The Docklands Primary School, Haileybury and Simonds Catholic College are all under a 3km car ride. For those in kinder, the St Mary’s Kindergarten and Early Learning Child Care Centre are around 3 to 4kms away. Tertiary students are spoilt for choice with various universities within the vicinity such as RMIT, Swinburne, La Trobe, University of Melbourne and Victoria University. 

What’s Going On? 

There is a lot to explore in West Melbourne. Filled with countless parks, you can bask in the sunshine at the idyllic Flagstaff Gardens or take the dog for a stroll at the Dog Park in Docklands. You can get creative by entering an immersive experience at the ArtVo Gallery, browse the exhibits at the Australian Centre For Contemporary Art and visit artworks at the highly regarded National Gallery of Victoria. To add, you might want to catch a sports game or event held at Marvel Stadium. For a fun night out, the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel provides breathtaking views and the much loved Crown Hotel is just close by.
