20 Reasons why you should consider Brisbane to live

Brisbane often gets overlooked when people ask which Australian city is the best to live in. Melbourne has been voted six years in a row as the world’s most liveable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Survey, whilst Sydney has the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and of course one of the world’s best New Year’s Eve Firework displays.

However, Brisbane is one city that should not be overlooked and is definitely on the rise in terms of popularity with an ever increasing population choosing to migrate here from both interstate and internationally.

So why should you consider Brisbane for your next home or investment? Here are our top 20 reasons which we believe make Brisbane great!

1. The weather

Brisbane boasts fantastic weather and its subtropical climate means the city has an average of 283 days of sunshine every year, meaning you can enjoy the city all-year round.

2. Great location

Perfectly placed halfway between the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, Brisbane has some of the best beaches less than an hour’s drive away, whilst for a change of scenery then the mountains are located out west, perfect for a day’s exploring. Brisbane is also close to some of the major tourist attractions including Wet’n’Wild and Movie World, making for a fun day out for the whole family. Residents can make the most of spectacular views across Brisbane River, the city skyline or across the picturesque mountains.

3. More affordable property

Unlike its east coast rivals, Brisbane is home to far more affordable property, making it easier to get a foothold on the property ladder as a home buyer or investor. You can still secure new off the plan apartments within 5km of the CBD for less than $400,000. You definitely cannot say the same for Sydney!

4. Less congested roads

Brisbane residents are also blessed with substantially less traffic on the roads compared to Sydney. This makes getting around far easier by car with few delays and shorter commutes.

5. Reliable public transport system

Getting around by public transport in Brisbane is also really easy, whether you travel by train, bus or ferry. Bus users can take advantage of fast busways dedicated to bus only traffic. This includes the Northern Busway and South East Busway.

6. Plethora of dining options

Brisbane is becoming a food lover’s paradise with a plethora of dining options to consider. From the popular Eat Street Markets in Northshore Hamilton to casual cafes, good pubs and fine dining establishments, there is something to satisfy any hungry stomach. The city is also home to a number of watering holes from classy bars to old fashioned pubs.

7. Fantastic shopping opportunities

Shopping in Brisbane is also not to be underrated. Brisbane is home to a wealth of shopping opportunities from malls and precincts showcasing not only local designers but also international labels and flagship stores. Chermside is home to Westfield, the fifth largest shopping centre in Australia, whilst Fortitude Valley is renowned for its shopping potential.

8. Beautiful Brisbane River

Brisbane River also meanders its way throughout the city, providing plenty of opportunities for scenic water views and leisurely riverside walks and cycle rides. You can also hop on the CityCat and travel by water.

9. Brisbane Airport redevelopment

Brisbane Airport is the premier gateway to Queensland and is currently undergoing major construction and development work and is one of Australia’s most important growth hubs. Operating 24/7, Brisbane Airport is planning for a future that will see passengers, jobs and investment more than double in size in just 20 years. The biggest project includes the $1.35 billion New Parallel Runway, with expected aircrafts to land in 2002. Brisbane Airport is also set to become the Gateway to Asia.

10. Art and culture

For art and culture seekers then Brisbane is also home to Australia’s largest Gallery of Modern Art. Other major museums include the Queensland Museum and Queensland Art Gallery as well as a number of other smaller galleries and exhibitions. Brisbane also gets its fair share of live entertainment and will usually get shows and performances that also appear in Sydney and Melbourne.

11. Abundance of parks

Brisbane is also a very green place to live with plenty of parks to enjoy. Head to the City Botanic Gardens for a leisurely picnic by the water, or watch the sunset from the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park. Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Mount Coot-Tha are also close by and popular places to head, whilst there are many regional parks within the surrounding area, perfect for bushwalking.

12. Quality education

Some of the best education providers are situated in Australia and students in Brisbane have access to some of Australia’s finest education establishments including award-winning University of Queensland, and internationally renowned Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Griffith University. The University of Queensland is ranked the third best university in Australia, finished ahead of the University of New South Wales, Monash University, Macquarie, Deakin and RMIT as stated in the University Rankings List.

13. Excellent healthcare

The Greater Brisbane area is served by eight major public hospitals, four major private hospitals, alongside smaller public and private facilities. Some of the major hospitals include Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Herston, Mater Hospital Brisbane in Woolloongabba and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

14. Varied demographics

Brisbane is home to a wide demographic group from city professionals to young families with children, retirees and university students from all over the world. This multicultural community provides a vibrant place to live.

15. Different housing types

It’s not just the traditional Queenslanders that can be found in Brisbane. The city is also home to large family homes, townhouses as well as an increasing number of new apartments from stylish boutiques to stunning high-rise apartment developments, complete with rooftop terrace, pool, BBQ and other luxury resident-only amenities. This housing diversity adds to the character and beauty of Brisbane.

16. Eighth most beautiful city

According to Rough Guides’ readers in 2015, Brisbane was voted as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, ranking in eighth position. This was ahead of Sydney, which finished thirteenth.

17. Commonwealth Games

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held at Gold Coast City, within easy reach of Brisbane and a number of events will also occur within Brisbane itself. It’s major events like these which are putting Brisbane on the map.

18. New World City status

Brisbane has a vision to become Australia’s next New World City by 2022. This will provide residents with a better and enviable lifestyle where they can enjoy green spaces, easy commutes, alongside world-class career and business opportunities.

19. Major business hub

Brisbane is one of Australia’s major business hubs, with most major Australian companies as well as numerous international companies having contact offices in Brisbane. Home grown major companies include Flight Centre, Sunsuper, Boeing Australia and Suncorp-Metway Limited.

20. Exciting new developments

Finally, Brisbane has many new developments and infrastructure underway or due to start which will help to revitalise the city and improve the economy. Some of these main developments include Queen’s Wharf Precinct, Brisbane Live Entertainment Arena, Northshore Hamilton and the Brisbane Airport Redevelopment.
