New York to see its first Micro Apartments
Renters in New York City will be pleased to hear about the new micro apartments that are coming to their city, providing more affordable housing to singles, students and those on low incomes or tight budgets.
If you are on the hunt for affordable housing in New York City then you are in luck, with 55 affordable units to be assembled in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and to be stacked in Manhattan’s Kips Bay.
My Micro NY, designed by nARCHITECTS is the winning design of a 2013 micro apartment design competition. The 55 apartments are just 24 square metres to 33 square metres in size. However, the regular priced units will cost between US$2,000 - US$3,000 a month, whilst the other 22 units will be more affordable with a lower rent.
These 55 individual apartments will sit across 32 stories and include Juliette balconies, concealed storage space as well as 9 and 10-foot ceiling heights.
There is already a high level of interest in these micro units, with a city-wide waiting list. Due to this it is more than likely that further housing for singles will become available in the future.
This comes as great news for New Yorkers, where much of the population is made up of singles and thereby provides more housing options. By building smaller units at more affordable prices, this will help to bring down the price of rent throughout New York City.
Currently the minimum size for a home is 37 square metres, so these new homes will be the first to break below the zoning laws’ barrier.
The first tenants are expected to move in by the end of 2015.
