Melbourne world’s most liveable city for seventh year
There’s great news for Melbourne as the city has once again been named the world’s most liveable city for the seventh year in a row by The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Liveability Survey.
The EIU surveys 140 cities each year on factors including stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education and infrastructure.
Melbourne, which has ranked as the world’s number one liveable city for seven years in a row scored 97.5 out of a possible 100, the same score as last year. Melbourne received perfect scores of 100 out of 100 for Healthcare, Education and Infrastructure and scored 95.1 for Culture & Environment and 95 for Stability.
Melbourne, which kept its number one spot, was closely followed by the Austrian capital, Vienna which was separated by just 0.1 percentage point. Two other Canadian cities ranked in third and fourth spot (Vancouver and Toronto), whilst Adelaide in Australia ranked in fifth place. In fact, the top 10 cities remained unchanged from last year.

This announcement comes as great news for Melbourne residents and property buyers looking to invest in this city. Melbourne is home to world-class sporting venues, first class restaurants and shopping as well as a wealth of culture including art galleries, museums and theatres. There is an abundance of parks and green spaces for relaxation and recreation, whilst the city is home to some picturesque wineries and stunning beaches.
Melbourne is also one of Australia’s most culturally diverse cities, with a large proportion of Asian residents who come here to work, live and study, due to excellent career opportunities and some of the country’s best Universities.
Over the past six months, 35 of the 140 cities surveyed have experienced changes in their ranking position, whilst over a 12-month period, this rises to approximately 44 cities. Many of the top cities have experienced increasing instability which has caused some volatility in the scores of many cities, particularly in Europe.
One of the reasons that Melbourne outranked other top performing cities was down to its relatively low crime rates. Damascus in Syria was the world’s least liveable city with a score of 30.2 out of 100.
