Luxury Survival Bunkers for the Ultra Rich
Think that a luxury apartment equipped with a pool, spa and home theatre was amazing? Think again as these luxurious underground apartments can even withstand a nuclear blast!
Known as “Survival Condos", Larry Hall an engineer and software developer is the brains behind these incredible apartments which have been designed to give its residents “extended off-grid living in the event of a major disaster or emergency”.
But it doesn’t come cheap, with prices starting at $1.72 million for a half floor unit (approximately 920 square feet) and a full floor unit (approximately 1,840 square feet) costing $3.4 million. For those who have more cash to spend, they can ensure their survival is a little more luxurious with a Penthouse unit costing $5.1 million for approximately 3,200 square feet of space over two levels.
Holding as many as 70 people alive for five years, the building housed in what was the Atlas Missile Silo in rural Kansas is able to survive a nuclear apocalypse, whilst its residents can live in luxury. Built in the 1960s, these bunker’s walls are made from epoxy-hardened concrete, and are therefore one of the strongest man-made structures ever created.
Protection is one of the key factors of this development, offered by military grade security, biometric locks and walls that are as much as 2.7 metres thick, as far as 53 metres underground. Mr Hall stated that the development had “full military grade security that encompassed both lethal and non lethal measures to ensure the safety of the residents and the facility no matter what the threat”.
As well as containing a “hydroponic” vegetable garden, the complex has its own water supply consisting of a 75,000 gallon water tank as well as an air filtration system which includes Nuclear, Biological and Chemical filtration. Other features include a generator, general store, wind turbine and if you need minor surgery or medical attention, there is even a Medical First Aid Centre.
When it comes to exercise, residents can work out at the gym or use the climbing wall, as well as there being an indoor pool and spa. For those looking to relax and unwind there is a custom theatre, custom bar and lounge as well as a library and classroom.
Residents are able to come and go as they please using this as either their primary residence or as their second home. Survival Condo 1 has already sold out; however, apartments within Silo 2 are currently under construction and still available to purchase.
Most of the residents are typically successful and well-educated people who simply want peace of mind for themselves and their families if a crisis or disaster was to occur. Everyone helps out to keep the facilities clean and fully maintained as well as secure, whilst being responsible for the livelihood of everyone during a crisis, such as being involved with farming, education or medical support.
But not just anyone can apply. If you are interested in buying one of these units you will undergo criminal screening and need to have good values. You also need to prove that you have the financial resources, education and experience to take part in the shared tasks of survival under what could be difficult situations.
