Suburb Profile: Coolangatta, QLD

With sandy beaches and sprawling coastlines, the much-loved suburb of Coolangatta offers a breath of fresh air and an idyllic escape from the fast-paced lifestyle. It’s situated around 30kms south from the sunny Gold Coast Central Business District and sits close to the Queensland and New South Wales borders. The area has been recognised for being a prime holiday destination, hosting renowned surfing events and where popular tourist attractions can be found. The Captain Cook Memorial and Lighthouse are a few of the many heritage sites that are listed there.

The Neighbours 

The flourishing community is part of the City of Gold Coast and has drawn residents with its subtropical climate and welcoming environment. The majority of residents are singles, retirees, independent youth and established families. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has estimated the population to reach 6 000 occupants and expected to grow further in the following years. The median age is 50 years old and there are around 4 000 private dwellings with most being apartments and detached housing.

The Commute

Passengers at Coolangatta have convenient access to multiple public transport options nearby. There are plenty of buses that are running along Marine Parade and Wharf Street to provide quick journeys around the vicinity. Meanwhile, the Varsity Lakes Train Station is about 20km away and the Gold Coast Airport just a 2km drive. For those travelling by car, they can directly take the Gold Coast Highway and the Pacific Motorway for a smooth trip.  

Shopping For The Family

The place is also surrounded by a number of malls, stores and supermarkets to choose from. All being within a short walking distance, The Strand and Kirra Village bring a selection of brands, a cinema, fast food and cafes by the beachfront. The Tweed Mall Shopping Centre is an easy 2km drive away with a daily farmers’ market delivering fresh produce. There are a variety of restaurants by Griffith Street where you can grab a meal from different cuisines.

The School Run

For families with students, they are able to attend a range of schools without having to go far from home. The Coolangatta State School, St Joseph’s Primary School and Tweed Heads Public School are all right around the corner, being under 2kms away. The Tweed River High School and Pacific Coast Christian School can also cater for those in secondary school. Higher education is also available with the Southern Cross University Gold Coast Campus and Coolangatta TAFE both being less than 3kms away from the town centre.

What’s Going On?  

At an ideal location filled with open spaces and boundless shores, there’s no need to look elsewhere for a vacation. You can have a surf at Kirra Point, enjoy swimming at the Coolangatta Beach or admire the scenery by Snapper Rocks. Point Danger has a park where you can have lunch and take in the vast ocean views. To add, the Rainbow Bay Lookout is about 2kms away where you can sit back and soak in the sunshine.
