The City of Sydney is committed to providing safe
and connected bicycle routes that can be used
for people of all ages and riding abilities. During
consultation for Sustainable Sydney 2030, some
of the most common requests included;
“dedicated safe spaces for cyclists” and
“improved amenity for pedestrians”. In response,
the Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan includes
improved cycling and pedestrian networks to
form a liveable, green network across Sydney
The City of Sydney bike network includes ten
Regional Routes to connect major destinations
across and beyond the City’s Local Government
Area. A total of 25 klms of the 55klm Regional
Route Network is now complete and the next
phase of cycleway project is focussed on
connecting major destinations by completing
the Regional Route Network and giving
commuters a real transport choice.
The City of Sydney is now working on a cycle link
between the CBD and Green Square. With
22,000 new jobs and 40,000 new residents
projected by 2030. Green Square will become
Sydney’s fastest growing area. The cycle link will
better connect Green Square, and the residents
in Waterloo, Redfern and Alexandria, with the
city centre and provide a congestion free option
for commuters.
This project forms part of the CBD to Green
Square cycle link, with new bi-directional
separated cycle ways along George Street;
Allen Street, Mandible Street and Short Street in
Waterloo.
This project will enhance the streetscape with
improved footpaths and pedestrian crossings,
over 50 new trees, additional planting and rain
gardens, as well as safer intersections and
calmer traffic.
